What Is Sex Therapy?
Sexual wellness is a vital component of overall mental health and should not be neglected. By seeking support through sex therapy, you can address performance anxiety, relationship challenges, and other sexual difficulties in a safe and supportive environment.
Sex therapy is a specialized form of therapy that focuses on addressing and resolving issues related to sexuality and sexual relationships. It is a collaborative process between a trained sex therapist and individuals or couples seeking assistance with various sexual concerns or challenges.
Sex therapy encompasses a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:
- Sexual dysfunction: Addressing difficulties such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, inability to reach orgasm, low sexual desire, or pain during intercourse.
- Relationship and communication issues: Working on improving communication, trust, and intimacy within a sexual relationship.
- Sexual trauma or abuse: Providing support and guidance for individuals who have experienced past sexual trauma or abuse and helping them heal and reclaim their sexual well-being.
- Sexual orientation and identity: Exploring and affirming one’s sexual orientation, gender identity, and helping individuals navigate related challenges.
- Intimacy and connection: Assisting individuals and couples in deepening emotional and physical intimacy, building stronger connections, and enhancing sexual satisfaction.
- Sexual education and information: Providing accurate and evidence-based information about sexual health, sexual functioning, and relationships.
During sex therapy sessions, the therapist creates a safe and non-judgmental environment for clients to discuss their concerns openly. They may employ various therapeutic techniques and approaches, such as talk therapy, mindfulness practices, or psychoeducation, depending on the client’s needs and goals.
Sex therapy sessions can be conducted individually or with partners, and they typically involve a combination of discussions, exercises, homework assignments, and interventions aimed at addressing specific challenges and promoting positive changes in sexual well-being.
It’s important to note that sex therapy is a confidential process, and therapists adhere to ethical guidelines to ensure client privacy and safety. The ultimate goal of sex therapy is to empower individuals and couples to overcome sexual difficulties, enhance their sexual satisfaction and overall well-being, and foster healthier and more fulfilling sexual relationships.
Do I need to be in a relationship to have sex therapy?
Not at all! It is best to learn more about yourself before you connect with another person around your sexuality.
What if I haven’t had sex with anyone or with my partner, is Sex Therapy still a good option?
Yes! We will work through those barriers together and learn more about how to support you and your partner.
What is the difference between coaching and therapy?
I am a licensed therapist in the state of California – meaning I have a Master’s in Counseling Psychology and have taken the requirements to earn my licensure. I keep up with licensure ethics and laws. In addition, I have a coaching business to support those residing outside of California. This allows me to use my clinical skills anywhere in the world.
Do you take insurance?
I do not take insurance. You will be responsible for any deductible/co-payment at the time of session. I encourage you to reach out to inquire what your out-of-network coverage is. As most insurance companies will be able to reimburse partial or full payments.
Payments are easily done through a secure online platform, and a superbill can be provided upon request.
How should I prepare for our time together?
Find a quiet spot where you will not be disturbed for our time together. If you have roommates or live with others, it could be best to wear headphones. Take some breathes and allow yourself time to get to session.
What’s your cancellation policy?
I have a 48 hour cancellation policy. I always offer one freebie, however after that I will charge the full amount for our session if not canceled within that time frame. Of course, there will be an emergency, for that I always ask that you give me more details, so I know how to support you.
